I turned the news on yesterday morning and braced for an update on the “New Un-Normal.” I prepared myself to hear about an increase in the number of COVID-19 related deaths; continued hate speech and rhetoric from our leaders; intensified resistance and push back from citizens committed to securing social justice for Black Americans. However, the unexpected slapped me in my face and punched me in my gut.
A group of white racists in Bloomington, Indiana--caught on camera, allegedly attempted to lynch a Black male civil rights activist on the 4th of July. He reports they jumped him from behind and beat him while threatening to get a noose, shouting “white power” and other offensive and derogatory racial slurs.
I stepped out of my bathroom to clarify what I heard. I cried. I cried tears of sadness, frustration, and astonishment. I then took a deep breath and thanked God for the White bystanders who converted themselves into activists and saved his life. I breathed a sigh of relief as I prayed for hope and togetherness.
I know that no matter how hard evil attempts to kneel on our collective necks, inject us with inequities, or deny us social justice, humanity, and decency reign. We must all take a stand for social justice and address racism head-on. I may not protest. I may not march. But I do stand!
Will you stand with me?
